Durmitor — Montenegro's Mountain Crown
Durmitor National Park is one of the most magnificent natural landscapes in the entire Balkans. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1980, it encompasses the Durmitor mountain massif — with 48 peaks above 2,000 metres — and the extraordinary Tara River Canyon, the deepest canyon in Europe. In summer, it is a paradise for hikers, mountain bikers, and rafters; in winter, it transforms into Montenegro's premier ski destination. At any time of year, the drive up through the forests and high plateaux is an experience that stays with you.
The gateway town of Žabljak (population around 2,000) sits at 1,450 metres above sea level — the highest town in the Balkans — and serves as the base for most visits to the national park. Despite its small size, it has a decent range of accommodation, restaurants, and outdoor activity operators.
The Natural Highlights
Black Lake — Crno Jezero
Black Lake is the symbol of Durmitor and one of the most photographed landscapes in Montenegro. Sitting at 1,416 metres, the lake is actually two interconnected glacial lakes — the Great Lake and the Small Lake — surrounded by dense pine and beech forest and framed by the jagged peaks of the Meded and Šljeme mountains.
The circular walking trail around the lake (3.6 km) is one of the most rewarding easy hikes in Montenegro — suitable for all fitness levels and accessible without a guide. The walk takes approximately 1.5–2 hours. The colour of the lake changes dramatically with the light: deep black in shade, emerald green in sunshine, and silver-grey in overcast conditions — hence the name "Black Lake."
There is a national park entry fee payable at the gate (approximately 3–5 EUR per person). The lake is accessible year-round, but the path is snow-covered from November through April.
Tara River Canyon
The Tara River Canyon is the defining natural feature of the Durmitor area. The Tara River has cut through the limestone mountains over millions of years to create a canyon that plunges up to 1,300 metres from rim to riverbed — deeper than the Grand Canyon at its deepest points. The canyon stretches for 78 km, of which 25 km are within the national park. The canyon walls are covered in pristine primeval forest — some of the largest remaining old-growth forest in Europe — which was the primary reason for UNESCO designation.
Đurđevića Tara Bridge
Đurđevića Tara Bridge is the most dramatic single piece of architecture in Montenegro. Built between 1937 and 1940, it was at the time of construction the largest vehicular concrete arch bridge in the world. The bridge spans the Tara Canyon at a height of 172 metres above the river — you can walk across it and peer down into the gorge below, a genuinely vertiginous experience. A zipline crossing the canyon near the bridge is a popular adventure activity.
Info
Đurđevića Tara Bridge is located about 20 km east of Žabljak on the road towards Mojkovac. It is free to visit and walk across. The zipline operator beside the bridge offers crossings from approximately 15 EUR. The views from both the bridge and the surrounding viewpoints are extraordinary at any time of year.
Outdoor Activities
Hiking in Durmitor
Durmitor has over 50 marked hiking trails ranging from the easy lakeside loop to multi-day summit expeditions. The most popular summit hike is Bobotov Kuk (2,523 m) — the highest peak of the Durmitor massif. The standard ascent takes 5–7 hours return from the Ćurevac trailhead and is suitable for fit walkers with no technical climbing experience. Views from the summit extend to the Adriatic on clear days.
Other popular hikes include Prutas (2,393 m), the Ice Cave (Ledena Pećina) trail, and the multi-day traverse of the Durmitor ring. The national park authority provides trail maps, and guided hikes can be arranged through operators in Žabljak.
White-Water Rafting on the Tara
Tara River rafting is one of the most popular adventure activities in Montenegro and is often cited as the highlight of visitors' entire trip. The classic multi-day trip runs from Splavište (near Mojkovac) to Šćepan Polje — a 2-day journey through the heart of the canyon. Single-day trips from Šćepan Polje cover the most spectacular lower section. The rafting season runs from April to October; the highest and most exciting water levels are in May and June.
All reputable operators provide wetsuits, helmets, paddles, and experienced guides. Groups of all experience levels are catered for — including families with children (minimum age is usually 6–8 years, depending on water level).
Skiing at Žabljak
Žabljak is Montenegro's only significant ski resort, with ski runs on the slopes of Savin Kuk (1,850 m) and Javorovača. The ski area is modest by Alpine standards — 12 km of marked runs, 4 ski lifts — but the snow quality is excellent and the prices are very low compared to Western European resorts. Ski equipment hire, lessons, and ski passes are all available in the town. The resort also offers snowshoeing, snowmobiling, and cross-country skiing on the high plateau.

Mountain Driving Tips
The approach to Žabljak involves mountain roads with significant gradients and hairpin bends. The road is well maintained but demands attention:
- Use a low gear on long descents to avoid brake fade — do not ride the brakes continuously
- Give way to uphill traffic on the narrowest sections
- Watch for livestock (sheep and cattle) on the road, especially in early morning and evening
- Mountain fog can descend rapidly at any time of year — reduce speed immediately if visibility drops
- In winter, snow chains or winter tyres are mandatory and conditions can become severe with little warning
Warning
In winter (November–April), always check road conditions before departing for Durmitor. The Montenegro road authority (JPMC) publishes real-time road status at amss.me. Carry a snow shovel, warm clothing, and extra food and water when driving to Durmitor in winter conditions.
Accommodation and Practical Information
Where to Stay in Žabljak
Žabljak has a good range of accommodation: from small family-run guesthouses (pension) to larger hotels with spa facilities. Prices are significantly lower than coastal Montenegro — a comfortable double room typically costs 40–80 EUR per night in summer. For ski season, book well in advance as capacity is limited. Wild camping within the national park is not permitted, but there are several designated camping grounds near Žabljak and along the Tara River canyon.
Tip
Combining Durmitor with a Tara Canyon rafting trip makes for an outstanding 2–3 day itinerary from the coast. Drive up on day 1, raft on day 2, and return on day 3 via a different route for variety. MAXICAR rental cars are perfectly suited for this trip — just ensure your hire period covers the extra days.
